According to recent reporting, Grandview will soon have a new ice cream shop when Johnson’s Real Ice Cream opens at 1325 Grandview Ave. Serving the Columbus area since 1950, Johnson’s Real Ice Cream has three other scoop shops across the city, with locations in Bexley, Dublin and New Albany.

President and fourth-generation operator of Johnson’s Real Ice Cream Matt Wilcoxon tells What Now Columbus that plans are in place to start construction on the location in early November, with a target opening date of next March.

While the 1,400 square foot building is still going through the design phase, Wilcoxon said the seating capacity is still being worked out, however, there are also plans to add outdoor seating. According to Wilcoxon, the new location will be modeled off its Dublin and New Albany scoop shops, with Grandview to likely offer 36 to 40 ice flavors during the peak season. The shop also plans to serve ice cream sundaes, ice cream cookie sandwiches, cakes and pies to go, along with bottled drinks.

“We’re really excited about the location, we’re very community oriented, and we’re always looking for ways to support the community as whole,” Wilcoxon said.

Wilcoxon explained that although there are three existing shops, the company doesn’t expand fast, because everything boils down to finding the right location, in a community that works with their values and business model. A big part of those values boil down to a focus on the importance of family, doing good in the community and supporting local schools. And, Wilcoxon said, one of their core values starts with the way each employee is treated.

“My grandfather taught me to take care of your employees and they’ll take care of you.”
